Mira Grant, also known as Seanan McGuire in urban fantasy circles, burst onto the scene last year with her zombie SF novel Feed. It was a finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award, and she won the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer, in addition to appearing on several year’s best lists.
Her second book in the Newsflesh series, Deadline, is just out, and Omni took the opportunity to interview her. Where did she answer the questions? "From my very orange bedroom in Northern California, surrounded by an assortment of toys, weapons, books, and horror movies. Oh, and cats. All three cats are currently in the room, watching me type with suspicious eyes. There is a machete leaning against the cabinet to my left. Why? Because that's where the machete goes, of course."
Amazon.com: Did you always want to be a writer? If not, what did you want to be?
Mira Grant: I always wanted to be a writer. I mean, I've wanted to be other things in addition to being a writer--a Broadway singer, a mad scientist, a Time Lord, an English teacher, and, for a little while, a professional folklorist--but “writer” was always what came first. Ever since I was a little girl. It was an early goal, and it never shifted.
