Omni Exclusive: Knopf Publisher, Sonny Mehta, on Murakami's "1Q84"
Haruki Murakami is a rarity in publishing. A contemporary writer of mind-bending fiction whose remarkable ability to blur the lines between fantasy and reality have earned him a cult following, not only in his native Japan, but in every country where his books are published. He is a literary superstar.
I have long been a passionate admirer of Murakami's work, starting with A Wild Sheep Chase, his first novel that was translated into English, all the way up to his more recent best sellers, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore.
To say that his new novel, 1Q84, has been eagerly anticipated would be a vast understatement. The book -- which has already been released in foreign markets in three separate installments -- is finally being published in a single volume here in the US. And it is truly a work of art. It combines the finest aspects of traditional bookmaking with all the style and beauty of the best of modern design.
At its core, 1Q84 is a spectacular love story. The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo, but because this is a Murakami novel, nothing is quite what it seems. There's a parallel universe, two moons circling the earth, and, not surprisingly, a full cast of unforgettable characters. 1Q84 is a daring work of fiction and a dazzling feat of imagination, and it is perhaps the most ambitious work yet from one of the world's most celebrated writers.--Sonny Mehta

"I'm aware of the fact that if there's a plane in the sky and it's over Manhattan and it's close to the anniversary of Sept. 11 it's a connection people might make," she said. "I wanted to wait long enough after the anniversary that people wouldn't make that connections but I can see how they could." http://www.mtsconverter.jp Plans for the skywriting were announced ahead of time , with Beck encouraging witnesses to email her photos. She was inspired by the "Surrender Dorothy" skywritten message in "The Wizard of Oz." http://www.mtsconverter.jp/mts-converter-for-mac.htm
