Announcing the Editors' Best Books of 2016

BOTYpicPicking our best book of the year is a different experience each time. Sometimes it's difficult and sometimes it's easy. In 2016, it was both. We considered a lot of really great contenders for our #1 pick, but we kept coming back to one title: Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad.

The Underground Railroad starts with an interesting conceit—the underground railroad isn't just a metaphor, it's real. What follows is a book that makes you feel and think, one slightly fantastical but entirely grounded in history. It's a great work of literature, but it's also a book you'll want to pick back up and read.

Just beyond our #1 pick stand three debut writers. This was not by design, but The Wolf Road, Hillbilly Elegy, and The Nix are all first books. You'll find a lot of old favorites on this list, and hopefully some new favorites, too. This is a great time for book lovers.

Happy Reading!
