Celebrity Picks: Gene Luen Yang's Favorite Reads of 2017

GeneLuenYang_SelfPortrait_140When he was named the Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress in 2016, author and artist Gene Luen Yang decided to make “Reading without Walls” his focus.

What is Reading without Walls? It challenges kids—and the rest of us as well—to 1) read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you, 2) read a book about a topic you don’t know much about, and 3) read a book in a format that you don’t normally read for fun. This might be a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, a picture book, or a hybrid book.

Secret Coders, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and New Superman: Made in China are among Gene’s most recent books, demonstrating that he’s not just talking about reading without walls—he’s creating books without walls as well.

The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui - Thi Bui's graphic memoir broke my heart. I'm still picking up the pieces.

Tasting the Sky: A Palestinian Childhood by Ibtisam Barakat - This book made me laugh and cringe and tear up, sometimes on the same page. Barakat gave me a glimpse into a world that's completely foreign to me. And by doing so, she paradoxically highlighted the emotional realities we all share in common.

Flintstones Vol. 1 by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh - Who knew a Flintstones comic could be this good? (No offense, Flintstones fans!) Russell and Pugh use everybody's favorite modern stone-age family to discuss contemporary America with nuance and depth.
