Children's Books for Back to School

BTS_IISchool supplies are piling up and so are first day jitters.  Fortunately there are lots of reassuring new books to help little ones get excited about starting school for the first time or returning to a new teacher and classmates. Below are a handful of my favorite school stories for the new year.

How to Get Your Teacher Ready by Jean Reagan

From the author of How to Babysit a Grandma, a picture book for every young student--How to Get Your Teacher Ready. A fun look at making your teacher feel welcome during all the days of the school year. A very cute addition to the "How to" series. Ages 4-8

Twindergarten by Nikki Ehrlich

For many multiples kindergarten means being apart for the first time, so Twindergarten is a great introduction. Twins Dax and Zoe are in different classes and one is a little more anxious about it than the other. In the end, new friends are made, and the sibling bond is as strong as ever. Ages 4-8

Pottymouth and Stoopid by James Patterson

James Patterson takes on bullying with this story for middle-grade students. The old adage about "words can never hurt me" isn't necessarily true--words do hurt and these seventh grade boys are tired of the labels they've been stuck with since preschool. The answer? Prove they've been underestimated all along... Ages 8-12

The Teacher's Pet by Anica Mrose Rissi

A funny play on the classroom critter, in this case The Teacher's Pet is a tadpole that turns into something much bigger than a frog. In fact, Bruno is a hippopotamus. And when the kids start seeing big problems, it's up to them to bring their teacher in line to do something about that pet... Loads of fun when the kids save the day. Ages 4-8

Second Grade, Here I Come! by D.J. Steinberg

There are many books about starting kindergarten, or even first grade, but second grade is mostly unheralded. Not anymore--Second Grade, Here I Come celebrates all the excitement of second grade in the form of fun and silly poems. Ages 5-7
