The Best Kids' Books of 2017

NumberOneMedalIt's that time again, when we announce our picks for the best books of the year, and today it's all about the best in children's books. 2017 has been a particularly strong year in books for middle graders, and nonfiction kids' books just keep getting better--topics and formats that appeal to kids instead of the homework-looking titles that used to dominate the category.

Our number one pick of the year in kids' books?  Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan CrowMore on that one in the Ages 9-12 section below, where you'll see our number one picks for each age group plus nonfiction kids (which covers all ages).  But I'll just say this about it--Nevermoor has all the hallmarks of a series kids are going to absolutely love reading.  And we are heading into a whole lot of time off on the old school calendar in the next six weeks...

Full lists for each age range are below, and you'll find it all in one place on the Best Children's Books of 2017 page.

Roger Priddy is the king of books for babies and toddlers and what stood out with Red Car, Green Car is the way Priddy brings the concept of colors to an interactive and highly visual place, while maintaining a board book format.

We're All Wonders by R.J. Palacio came out earlier in the year but stayed on top of the list. The movie is coming out later this month and even more kids will find their way to Palacio's magnificent middle grade novel, Wonder.  Now the younger kids can also get some of the wisdom of Auggie's story, in a book written for them.

Our number one pick is The Antlered Ship by Dashka Slater, a picture book intended for older kids. Breathtakingly beautiful illustrations accompany this charming story of a fox who learns that friends come in all shapes and sizes, curiosity brings adventure, and that—though life may be unpredictable—the journey is magical.

Our top pick overall for children's books, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow .  In this debut novel and the start of a new series, a mentor reminiscent of Willy Wonka helps a cursed girl to escape death, kicking off a wildly imaginative adventure full of magic, trials of courage, and friendship.  An exciting debut for fans of Harry Potter or any young reader looking to begin a fast-paced new series.

This is How We Do It by Matt Lamothe takes kids' interest in how their counterparts live in other parts of the world--what school is like, free time, clothes, food, transportation--and puts it all into a creative, boldly illustrated picture book about seven kids across the globe.
