Celebrity Picks: Anna Kendrick's Favorite Reads of 2016

Anna-Kendrick225If you've ever wondered if movie stars are just like us, Anna Kendrick's funny and self-deprecating memoir, Scrappy Little Nobody, tells us definitively: sometimes. Though she's built a successful acting career with roles in Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air, Twilight, and Into the Woods, Scrappy describes her childhood strategy to "“keep the crazy inside my head where it belonged," a resolution that resulted in "10 percent defiant" behavior and a book full of honest, amusing stories.

Kendrick also has excellent taste in reading. See her favorite books of the year below (including last year's most popular choice among celebrities, So You've Been Publicly Shamed), and look here for more celebrity favorites. So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson
I read this in one sitting, because it was too fun and compelling to put down. It's one of those rare and wonderful books that makes you envious of the people who are going to read it for the first time. Even though this book is dark and funny, I felt like a more empathic person after I finished it. Only slightly, but still.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
For a book that deals with dystopian society in which women become reproductive slaves, it manages to be so measured and restrained that you barely notice as you start to question what you'd be willing to go along with to survive. When One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest made me feel crazy, I blamed it on the style of prose. When this book made me feel crazy, it was hard to shake off.

Blood Meridian by Cormac Mccarthy
Patton Oswalt recommended this book to me when I mentioned that I'd just finished The Handmaid's Tale. So, maybe that dude wants to ruin my life? The language is dense and gorgeous and the subject matter is some of the most horrifying stuff I've ever had to reckon with. If you loved the film The Proposition but wish it had given you more nightmares, this is the book for you.
