Celebrity Picks: Helen Fielding's Favorite Reads of 2016

HelenFielding_byAlisaConnan225Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones is a household name, whether you read the book published in 1995, watched the film, or have been following Jones's continuing adventures as she's charmingly fumbled through the life stages of dating, marriage, and, now, motherhood. Bridget always lays it right out there, revealing hilarious truths about what life really is, not what we hope it will be.

Bridget Jones's Baby: The Diaries released this fall in book form and on the big screen.

My feel-good recipe is to have a top self- help book on the go together with a novel with a light and jolly perspective on life. On the novel front, anything by P.G. Wodehouse never fails, but this year, Love Nina: A Nanny Writes Home worked just the same magic. Nina was a nanny for two hilarious boys and their eccentric single mum living at the heart of the London literary scene. As famous writers pop round for cups of tea, the humour is in the detail of everyday life--is it weird if someone “hates wood?” Whose fault is it if the fishmonger seems “difficult to do business with.”? And is it OK to ask a world famous playwright to extract one of the children from a dumpster?

I’m addicted to self-help books, and was quite carried away with this inspiring Japanese tome. Perhaps the author takes tidiness a little too far: advising that at the end of each day, you should not only empty your handbag, but thank it for all its the hard work; and that you should keep your sweaters nicely folded in a pile, but rotate them so the sweaters at the bottom don’t feel sad. But the enthusiasm for being light and clutter-free forms an almost philosophical tract. I intend to fold and rotate my sweaters daily; just as soon as I’ve finished reading, Never Procrastinate Again.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I re-read Pride and Prejudice every year. I wish Jane Austen could know how many books and movies she has inspired – including Curtis Sittenfeld’s excellent Eligible this year . But the original will always be unparalleled: a perfect example of the novel form. Austen hangs it all on a classic page-turning romantic plot ( one I shamelessly stole for Bridget Jones’ Diary.) . She writes with wit and wisdom about the tiny details of her characters lives - but those details are rich with insights into womanhood, human society and human nature which are every bit as true and relevant today as when Jane Austen first sat down with her pen and ink.
