The Guest Room by Chris Bohjalian
Chris is one of those writers who consistently creates compelling fiction with breathtaking writing, but this novel - about sex slavery, with a pitch perfect story from the POV of a young girl who is a victim - is not only timely but impossible to forget.

Just when I didn't think Yoon could craft a book better than her debut...out came this gem. A completely original exploration on coincidence, love, and race. Don't dismiss this novel because it happens to come with a YA label - it is for everyone who has ever been buffeted by fate.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Combining a whimsical and wonderful conceit - what if the Underground Railroad was ACTUALLY a railroad underground? - with the various points of view of individuals enmeshed in the fabric of organized slavery - from slaves to runaway slave catchers to those who took a silent stand against the institution - this book astonished me with its scope, prose, and unflinching account of the irreparable personal costs of slavery and racism in this country. I can't stop thinking about it.
