Celebrity Picks: Steve Young's Favorite Reads of 2016

Steve-Young225Steve Young is regarded as one of the greatest college and pro football players of all time. Across a pro career spanning more than 15 years, the left-handed quarterback earned numerous achievements and accolades, including a victory in Super Bowl XXIX (where he was named Most Valuable Player for his record SIX touchdown passes) and two NFL MVP awards, ultimately receiving football's highest honor in 2005: induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His new memoir, QB: My Life Behind the Spiral, is a testament to perseverance in the face of adversity and doubt, in football and in life.

But which books does Young turn to for motivation? It turns out that he's also something of a history buff. See his picks below, and look here for more celebrity favorites. Learn more about the Amazon Books Editors' picks for the Best Books of the Year.

The Wright Brothers by David McCullough
I enjoy anything David McCullough writes, but his portrait of Orville and Wilbur Wright resonated with me in a particularly personal way. Virtually no one believed that the Wrights would be able to fly. The scene of Orville elevating with the head wind in what would become the first flight was breathtaking. He only flew 120 feet — less than half the distance of a football field — and remained airborne for about 12 seconds. But he flew! This reminds me so much of my own journey as a quarterback, climbing to the summit one step at a time after being told early on I’d never make it.

Make a Choice by Jeff Benedict
This pocket size book is seven inspiring stories of ordinary people who faced extraordinary tough circumstances — the death of a child, the loss of a spouse, the destruction of a home in a natural disaster. My collaborator Jeff Benedict wrote this book while he was helping me write my autobiography. What I love about Make a Choice is that it features people who have refused to let injustice, misfortune, and heartbreaking loss dictate their outlook on life. We can all use stories like these.

Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis
Ellis’s insights into how the Founding Fathers struggled with complex challenges, such as how to eradicate slavery at a time when racist and segregationist attitudes were prevalent and no model of a truly biracial society existed anywhere in the world, were stirring reminders of how we need to do so much better in our current political discourse. He also offers great insights into character, such as his description of George Washington as “the leader who could be trusted with power because he was so ready to give it up.” Great stuff.
